Description
1964 was one of the most significant years in Wayne Shorter's musical life. At the beginning of the year, the saxophonist was still a member of Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, appearing on such classic Blue Note albums as Free for All and Indestructible . That spring, Shorter made his successful debut on his own label with Night Dreamer and quickly recorded an impressive follow-up, JuJu . That summer, he joined Miles Davis's quintet, cementing a lineup that would become one of the most iconic ensembles in jazz history. And when Shorter entered Van Gelder Studios with Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Elvin Jones on Christmas Eve 1964, they created a masterpiece: Speak No Evil , a magnificent collection of six original Shorter compositions, including the rousing title track "Witch Hunt" and the sublime ballad "Infant Eyes."
